The Strange Chronicles

February 2001

28 February 2001 I went hunting again this afternoon Had company over for dinner last night enjoying cold boiled lobster dipped in red-sauce with lots of horseradish, Tabasco and lime.  These bugs were large enough we had tails and the pleasure of picking sweet pieces of meat out of antennas and legs.  I had a couple of large glasses of water before heading to bed.  Of course this led to a visit to a side deck in the wee morning hours for a check on phosphorescence. It was a beautifully clear night and the sliver of new moon had long since set.  Ursa major was upside-down in the north, Orion and his pups headed to bed and the Southern Cross was sitting upright on the southern horizon.  I was sure it was the proper cross since the two pointer stars Ed and Bernie were tagging right along.

Ed and Bernie are a cruising couple we got to know down along Venezuela.  They completed their circumnavigation after 22 years - just about the right pace.  One evening, anchored off Aruba, Ed pointed out the Southern Cross and along with a couple of pointer stars that help distinguish the true cross from similar constellation known as the "false" cross.  We chose to name the two pointers after these great friends and wonderful role models.

16 February 2001 The lockers, freezer and frig are bulging. The latest cold front from the US is expected to pass through here Saturday night (2am no doubt) bringing high winds. Our weather fax gives NOAA predictions out to Monday with continuing high winds and seas. Sooner or later the wind will drop and we’ll cross the Yucatan Strait. That’s a rough place to be in high winds.
