Scuba Divers at Beautiful Blue Lagoon in Texas

The Beautiful Blue Lagoon

Beginning in the late 1800’s early 1900’s the area around Huntsville was known for its quarried stone and was used to help form the deep water port in Galveston as well as the Texas City dike. At some point, the natural springs in the area started filling the quarries at a rate that made it difficult to justify continuing to pull the stone so the quarry was abandoned by the company.

Moving forward to the present day, Blue Lagoon is a site especially for divers.  Consisting of two lagoons each with submerged platforms as well as other objects to entertain divers.  The maximum depth is 30 feet.

The second weekend of the month is our scheduled open water weekend and certified divers are always welcome to come and share our platforms and to meet other divers.

Our Open Water Divers Meet at the lake at about 8:30 AM.  If you are not in class, you and your buddy should plan on arriving before 10:00 AM

FAQ

This is just a placeholder to help you visualize how the content is displayed in the tabs. Feel free to edit this with your actual content.

Is there a fee?The facility charges a daily fee to dive or snorkel at the Blue Lagoon. Be sure to tell them you are a diver because the fee for a swimmer is higher
What do I need to bring? You will need your total diving system, including cylinders and weights if you are diving. You should also bring a tarp to put your equipment on while yo are out of the water. Really cool diving tarps and beach mats are available at Oceanic Ventures. You may also want to bring a chair and some people bring their own portable “pop-ups” for sun protection.
What about food and drinks? You should plan on bringing snacks, lunch and drinks with you. There really are not facilities at the lake or nearby. On Saturdays we generally have a potluck lunch where people share some of what they have brought with others.
What is the water temperature? The temperature varies with the season. From May to September it is warm. In other months it takes on the consistent overnight temperature.
What is there to see underwater? There are a variety of sunken objects ranging from boats to a conastoga wagon. Additionally, this was a working rock quarry so there are various slabs of limestone and other stones with drill holes for explosives or mining equipmen.
What is the surface like? You are in the middle of the East Texas Piney Woods so the lake is surrounded by large pine trees and scrub making it a beautiful relaxing site. The dive sites have small shelters with picnic tables and a way to get into the water.
What about safety?Generally, our staff are trained first aid providers and usually bring a first aid kit and an oxygen kit with them to the Lake. Additionally, the area is serviced by the 911 system. As far as the safety of your vehicle and equipment left on the surface while you are diving, we have not had any issues in the past and we believe that your things are generally safe. However, it is best to lock your money and valuables in your car while you are diving.
How late are you at the lake?We start our day at about 8:00-8:30 in the summer months and we generally wrap things up around 4:00. We recommend coming in morning to go diving because the water is clearer and you are more likely to catch people starting rather than packing up to go home.
How far is it?Most people think of distance in time. If there is no road construction it takes about an hour and a half to get to the entrance from Oceanic Ventures.
Entry Fees

These fees are subject to change but currently, they are:

Daily  Fee

Rates for Divers — $25.00 per person

What People Say…

Kelley Jones Minor

Appreciate the personal service and care at Oceanic Ventures

Ann really took her time helping to fit my niece with her first mask and fins. We so appreciated the personal attention, and we loved that she was open to talking about dive certification, but she wasn't giving us the hard sell. We live out toward Tomball but would happily drive back here vs. going to a nearby competitor simply for the service.

Oceanic Ventures is the best dive shop

Best Dive Shop I've ever used. I've been diving since 1984 and you will not find more talented staff anywhere else. They are small, family owned and service oriented #1. You get personal service from start to finish from people who actually dive all over the world. I've taken simple to advance courses from them and the trainers are excellent. Dive trips are well organized to unique locations and always fun. This type of depth of knowledge is very difficult to find, especially in Texas.

Oceanic Ventures is a great dive shop

Great dive shop with wonderful instructors to share your passion for the underwater world. They have fun for the whole family from kids diving programs through advanced diving. Checkout their scuba diving vacation to some of the best diving in the world. I really like the Diva dive vacation to Grand Cayman.

Oceanic Ventures is the best

I have been to many scuba stores in Houston and this one is by far the best. Most scuba stores have a couple of salespersons who will show you one of the 40 types of fins and 10 types of regulators that they have in stock and immediately try to sell these to you. Most of these same stores really cater only to people just getting certified. Oceanic ventures has a very different business model. While they do have an inventory, it is not as large as other stores. The difference is that they really try to foster a dive community. It works. People come back again and again. Further, unlike many stores, they teach just about everything possible. If you want to teach your child how to snorkel, they teach that. If you want to learn how to dive 350 feet down on a rebreather using helium gas mixes and several additional scuba tanks, they teach that. They teach everything in between. Not many stores do that. Additionally, the staff is very knowledgeable about all the equipment they sell. You will never get an "I don't know about that" type of answer.
